BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. — A simple project outside the Berkeley County Veterans Affairs Office is highlighting a deeper commitment to service from one local veteran and his wife.
According to county officials, army veteran Bernard Bolduc and his wife, Shirley, recently took it upon themselves to restore a worn bench outside the VA office on Oakley Plantation Drive — replacing damaged wood and installing a new American flag placard, along with donating a second for future use.

Bolduc said the idea came after repeatedly passing by the office and noticing the bench needed attention.
“The staff here has been just wonderful anytime I come in,” he said. “A lot of veterans are getting the help they need.”
The couple, both raised in military families, say giving back is second nature and a continuation of a lifetime of service.

“We firmly believe in serving those who serve,” Shirley said.
That dedication spans generations, with family members currently serving and others preparing to follow in their footsteps.
The Berkeley County Veterans Affairs Office, located at 212 Oakley Plantation Drive in Moncks Corner, provides support and resources to local veterans. Officials say acts like this help make the space more welcoming for those who rely on its services.
