โSLEDโs Forensics Laboratory is the first and longest serving full service forensic laboratory in the state,โ according to Major Todd Hughey, PhD., SLEDโs laboratory director. โFirst accredited nationally in 1994, this international recognition is a major achievement that demonstrates SLEDโs commitment to quality and ensures our laboratory provides effective service for the stateโs law enforcement agencies.โ
Major Hughey said accreditation requires a continuous review of the laboratory systems to safeguard the integrity of the laboratory and its analytical work.ย Laboratories participating in the program must demonstrate that management, personnel, equipment, physical facilities, quality controls and operational and technical procedures all meet or exceed established international standards.
The SLED laboratory was accredited under eight disciplines and 22 testing categories.ย Testing included in the accreditation process includes Drug Chemistry, Toxicology, Biology, Trace Evidence, Firearms/Toolmarks, Latent Prints, Questioned Documents, and Crime Scene.
The SLED Forensic Services Laboratory employs over 100 forensic scientists and support staff and performs analysis on over 20,000 cases annually in support of the stateโs 46 counties.
