GOOSE CREEK, S.C.–American Red Cross disaster-trained volunteers assisted a family on Tuesday whose apartment, located on Harbour Lake Drive in Goose Creek, was damaged by a fire.
The Goose Creek Fire Department responded to the blaze, volunteers stated. The Red Cross helped one adult and four children by providing financial assistance for food, clothing, temporary lodging, comfort kits with personal hygiene items and referrals to assist with their long-term recovery.
South Carolina consistently ranks within the top ten states for home fire deaths per capita and the Red Cross assists more than 7,100 people a year, 2,000 of them children, after home fires.
The American Red Cross, on average, responds to a home fire every four hours in South Carolina.
