MONCKS CORNER, SC – Berkeley County Council voted unanimously last night to approve the first two phases of a master reconstruction plan of Cypress Gardens, closed since last October’s historic flood.
Phases 1 and 2 of the Cypress Gardens Rehabilitation and Improvement Plan includes work on the pedestrian trails, boat landing, butterfly house, visitor’s center, cottage, restrooms and other action items necessary to reopen the park at the earliest opportunity possible.
“While it has been a long process to assess the full scope of damage and devise a master reconstruction plan, our resolve to rebuild Cypress Gardens into an even greater destination than it was before has only intensified,” said Berkeley County Supervisor Bill Peagler.
County officials believe these first two phases will be complete by the Spring of 2018.
“Based on engineering reports and associated scopes of work, we believe there is at least a year in delay of re-opening,” said Deputy Supervisor Tim Callanan. “Our plan calls for residents and tourists to enjoy the nature areas of the park on or before April 2018.
Council’s vote last night also included the funding of $1 million to complete these first two phases.
