Man Charged in Goose Creek Fatal Shooting

GOOSE CREEK, S.C. – The Berkeley County Sheriffโ€™s Office is investigating after a shooting killed one man Saturday night. The shooting investigation led to one man being arrested.

Just before 10:30 p.m., deputies responded to the 100 block of Westminster Boulevard in the Goose Creek area of Berkeley County after a woman called 911 to report a family argument.

While enroute to the call, deputies were advised that a male on scene was shot. Deputies arrived on scene and located one male suffering from a gunshot wound and he was pronounced deceased on scene.

The Berkeley County Coronerโ€™s Office identified the deceased as Earl Goodwater, 53, of Goose Creek.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Goodwater intervened in an altercation between his daughter and a male later identified as Joshua Scott Lee Butler. During the intervention, a physical altercation ensued between Goodwater and Butler and another subject. Butler went to his vehicle and retrieved a handgun and continued the altercation.

During a struggle of the handgun, Goodwater was fatally shot and Butler was shot in the arm. Butler left the scene but returned a short while later.

Butler was arrested and charged with domestic violence in the second degree and Voluntary manslaughter. There are other charges possibly pending against Butler.

The Berkeley County Sheriffโ€™s Office continues to investigate.
