SLED Investigating Inmate Death at Moncks Corner Jail

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. – The Berkeley County Coronerโ€™s Office was notified on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2025, at 8:39 a.m. of the death of an inmate at Hill-Finklea Detention Center in Moncks Corner.

The inmate was identified as William Long, a 65-year-old male, from Ladson.

According to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 8:30 a.m., detention deputies were conducting their checks and discovered an inmate that was having an unknown medical event that rendered the inmate unresponsive.

The inmate was housed in a single cell, alone. After the inmate was discovered unresponsive,
detention deputies and medical staff attempted life-saving measures but ultimately the inmate
was declared deceased at 8:35 a.m.

The cause and manner of death are pending an autopsy and toxicological testing, according to the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office.

Berkeley County EMS and Moncks Corner Fire & Rescue responded.

SLED and the Berkeley County Coronerโ€™s Office responded and are investigating this incident.
