Cross Man Arrested on Animal Cruelty, Attempted Murder Charges

Marcus Dyshaun Cumbee, 32, of Cross, has been charged with two counts of ill treatment to animals with cruelty and four counts of animal abandonment in Berkeley County. He also faces attempted murder in Orangeburg County.

CROSS, S.C. – A Cross man wanted in two counties was arrested Monday following an investigation into animal cruelty and an attempted murder case, according to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office.

Marcus Dyshaun Cumbee, 32, of Cherokee Path Lane in Cross, was taken into custody on Tuesday, May 13. He was booked into the Hill-Finklea Detention Center in Moncks Corner on two counts of ill treatment to animals with cruelty and four counts of animal abandonment.

Deputies said they responded Jan. 29 to a home on Cherokee Path Lane after the new property owner requested a welfare check. Upon arrival, deputies found three adult dogs roaming freely on the property. One of the dogs had recently given birth. Authorities also discovered six puppies, the remains of a deceased dog, and another dead dog caged at the back of the property.

The agency’s animal cruelty investigator responded to complete the investigation into the care and conditions of the animals.

Cumbee, who had outstanding warrants with both the Berkeley and Orangeburg County sheriff’s offices, was located during a surveillance operation by Berkeley County deputies and members of the U.S. Marshals Task Force. When authorities attempted to arrest him, deputies said Cumbee fled into nearby woods and was apprehended by a K-9 unit.

He was transported to a hospital for treatment before being released and booked into jail.

Cumbee also faces charges in Orangeburg County, including attempted murder and discharging a firearm into a dwelling.
