BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – For the fifth consecutive time, Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital has earned an “A” grade in The Leapfrog Group’s Spring 2025 Hospital Safety Grades, recognizing the hospital as one of the safest in South Carolina when it comes to protecting patients from preventable harm and medical errors.
The Berkeley County hospital received top marks in several key safety categories, including low rates of infections, surgical complications, and safety practices that prevent errors before they happen.
“All hospitals should be proud to earn an ‘A,’ but they should not rest on that laurel. Patient safety is a relentless, never-ending quest to put patients first,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO, The Leapfrog Group. “That’s why Leapfrog is highlighting the hospitals across the U.S. that have earned Straight A’s for over two years. Sustaining an A over multiple years reflects a deep-rooted commitment to patient safety.”

According to Leapfrog’s detailed findings, Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital scored “better than average” on measures such as:
- Preventing dangerous blood clots
- Avoiding patient falls and injuries
- Using computerized physician order entry systems to reduce medication errors
- Staff responsiveness and communication with doctors and nurses
The hospital also rated “above average” for having strong practices in place to ensure hand hygiene, effective leadership in preventing errors, and specially trained ICU staff.
Roper St. Francis Berkeley was one of just a few hospitals in the state to earn an “A” grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit organization that reviews more than 3,000 hospitals across the country. South Carolina ranked in the top 10 for the highest percentage of hospitals earning an A, with 18% of hospitals in the state receiving top marks.
