BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – Boaters in Berkeley County heading out for Memorial Day weekend can expect a helpful checkpoint before hitting the water. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) will conduct courtesy boat inspections at William Dennis Landing on the Tail Race Canal in Moncks Corner on Sunday, May 25, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The inspections are part of a statewide initiative aimed at keeping South Carolina’s waterways safe during one of the busiest boating weekends of the year. Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of the summer boating season, and local officers want to help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone on the water.

SCDNR officers will be checking boats for required safety equipment—like life jackets, fire extinguishers, and proper lighting—as well as verifying boat and motor registration. The inspections are free and voluntary, and no tickets will be issued during these checks. Boaters found to be missing equipment or out of compliance will be given the opportunity to correct the issues before launching.

In addition to the inspections, officers will be available to answer questions and provide safety tips for navigating Berkeley County waterways like Lake Moultrie and the Cooper River system.

For those who witness or need to report reckless boating, impaired operators, or other violations, SCDNR can be reached at 1-800-922-5431 or by dialing #DNR on a mobile phone.
