BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – Berkeley County has landed a top spot among the wealthiest counties in South Carolina, according to a recent study by financial technology company SmartAsset.
In the company’s 2025 analysis, Berkeley ranked third statewide, just behind Charleston and Beaufort counties. The ranking was based on a combination of three key indicators: median household income, investment income, and median home value.
How They Ranked It 📊
SmartAsset’s “wealth index” combined data from the U.S. Census Bureau and IRS to create a composite score for each county. Each metric, such as investment income, property value, and median income, was normalized and equally weighted to determine a final wealth ranking for all counties in South Carolina.
For Berkeley County:
- Median Household Income: $82,327
- Investment Income: $45,025
- Median Home Value: $348,747
These numbers reflect not just individual earnings but also home equity and long-term financial stability.
A Rising Economic Power 💼
Berkeley County’s rise on the wealth chart can be credited in part to its growing population, proximity to Charleston, and a robust local economy. The area is home to major employers like Nucor, Volvo Cars, Blackbaud, Century Aluminum, BP, and DuPont.
In 2022, the county reported a gross domestic product of approximately $10.6 billion, with a per capita GDP of around $46,147, further highlighting its economic strength.
