MONCKS CORNER, S.C. — A Moncks Corner husband and wife duo are in hot water after state investigators say they ripped off more than $20,000 from a vulnerable adult’s bank account and pocketed the funds through Cash App transfers and checks.

South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson announced Thursday that Larry Darnell Broadnax Jr., 42, and Charmaine D. Broadnax, 44, were arrested and hit with felony charges, including exploitation of a vulnerable adult and breach of trust. Both were booked into the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center in North Charleston on May 29.

According to investigators with the AG’s Vulnerable Adults and Medicaid Provider Fraud unit (VAMPF) and the Department of Veterans Affairs Inspector General, the pair went on a two-year money grab between June 2022 and June 2024.

Authorities say, Larry, who had power of attorney over the victim, siphoned thousands from the victim’s bank account into his own using checks and Cash App. Meanwhile, Charmaine allegedly took the shortcut route — linking the victim’s bank straight to her Cash App account and draining more than $10,000 from it for her own personal use.

The crimes are felonies and could each carry up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

Attorney General Wilson reminded the public that all suspects are innocent until proven guilty but warned his office won’t hesitate to prosecute anyone who targets South Carolina’s most vulnerable residents.

A judge has since released the pair each on a $30,000 bond. The case will be handled by the AG’s office.
