GOOSE CREEK, S.C. – A Goose Creek family is receiving assistance from the American Red Cross after a fire damaged their home on Donatella Drive on Sunday afternoon.

Red Cross disaster-trained volunteers are helping the three affected residents with emergency needs such as food, clothing, and shelter. The organization is also providing referrals to other support services to aid the family’s recovery.

The Red Cross is using the incident to remind the public that home fires are the most common disaster in the U.S., claiming an average of seven lives daily. They emphasize the importance of having working smoke alarms and a practiced fire escape plan.

“Every second counts,” the Red Cross said, encouraging residents to test smoke alarms monthly and review escape plans with all household members twice a year.

As part of their Prepare SC campaign, the Red Cross is partnering with communities through “Sound the Alarm” events to install free smoke alarms and offer fire safety education to families in high-risk areas.
