BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – Berkeley County’s animal shelter is in crisis mode as overcrowding reaches emergency levels, prompting a Tri-county call to action. Alongside Charleston Animal Society and Dorchester Paws, Berkeley Animal Center is participating in Lowcountry Paws Unite, a multi-county adoption push aimed at saving lives by getting pets into homes fast through reduced adoption fees.
“Adoptions will help shelters alleviate the strain of overcrowding,” said Berkeley Animal Center Spokeswoman Heather McDowell. “We urgently need to find these dogs and cats new, loving homes during our Lowcountry Paws Unite.”
With more than 2,200 animals in their collective care, the Tri-County shelters are sounding the alarm.

The situation has escalated dramatically since May, when a surge in stray and surrendered animals began flooding local shelters.
“This truly is a crisis and summer has just begun,” said Dorchester Paws Executive Director April Howard. Limited kennel space, resources, and staff mean animals can’t get the care they need unless the community steps up to adopt.

Berkeley County residents looking for a new furry friend can visit the shelter at 131 Central Berkeley Drive or browse available pets at AnimalCenter.BerkeleyCountySC.gov. With dogs, cats, kittens, and more in need of homes, there’s never been a better time to adopt—and quite literally save a life.
