BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – Forget stilettos. Some Berkeley County women are grabbing hard hats and hammers.
Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County is launching its annual Women Build on Sept. 11, honoring the National Day of Service by raising walls and hope for one local family.
This year’s project, running through Sept. 20, will unfold on Hutchinson Lane, where crews of women volunteers will help build a new home for the Brown Family.
“Women Build is about more than construction — it’s about community,” said George Druyos, CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County. “Together, we’re not only building a home for the Brown Family, but also creating lasting hope and opportunity for generations to come.”
The Browns’ two young sons rely on wheelchairs, so Habitat is hustling to raise $5,000 for an ADA roll-in shower to make the house truly accessible.

“Volunteers are the heart of Habitat’s mission,” Druyos added. “Each person who gives their time, talent, or resources is part of bringing hope and housing to families in need.”
The effort is backed by heavy-hitting sponsors like Landmark Construction, Home Telecom, Rotary Clubs, CPM Federal Credit Union, South Carolina Federal Credit Union, and a volunteer team from Berkeley Electric Cooperative. Local restaurants, including Big Billy’s Burger Joint and KFC, will fuel the work crews.
Community members can still swing a hammer — or open their wallets — to support the build. Donations for the Browns’ accessible bathroom and other Habitat projects can be made at berkeleyhabitat.org.
