BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – Leaders across Berkeley County and the state of South Carolina are reacting to the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot Wednesday at Utah Valley University during a Turning Point USA event as part of his “American Comeback Tour.” Kirk was 31.
Gov. Henry McMaster, acting at the request of President Donald Trump, ordered flags on the State Capitol, as well as all state and local government buildings, to be flown at half-staff until sunset on Sunday, Sept. 14, as a mark of respect for Kirk’s memory.

Shortly after his death, leaders within Berkeley County took to social media to react to the tragedy with reverence and sorrow.
“Charlie is an American hero,” said U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace, whose district includes parts of Berkeley County. “Bold in his faith, devoted as a husband and father, and unwavering in his love of freedom and the United States of America. One of the most brilliant debaters of our time, Charlie embodied the spirit of the First Amendment and lived out his convictions with courage. Throughout his life, God’s light shined brightly through him, touching countless lives and inspiring a new generation to stand for truth.”
South Carolina State Sen. Tom Fernandez of District 39, which also includes portions of Berkeley County, called Kirk’s death “unimaginable” for his wife, Erika, and their two children. “May we all find a way to reject political violence and honor human life above all else. God be with you till we meet again, Charlie. May the Shepherd’s care enfold you,” Fernandez said.
Berkeley County Supervisor Johnny Cribb reflected on Kirk’s deep faith, commitment to family, and unwavering values. “Rest in Peace, Charlie Kirk. Man of God, Loving Husband and Father, American Patriot, Fighter for the Unborn, Advocate for Strong Families, and a true believer and example for civil discourse. A life well lived and an eternity with God our Father,” he posted to Facebook.
Moncks Corner Mayor Thomas Hamilton Jr. expressed grief over the family’s loss. “There is no excuse for this to happen,” Hamilton said. “There is a woman with two small children who lost a husband, and the kids lost a dad.”
According to Moncks Corner councilman Chad Sweatman, despite his sudden death, Kirk’s legacy will live on. “Evil stole the battle today, but Charlie’s efforts to educate and bring our youth to Jesus won’t be deafened by a coward’s bullet. The battle has just begun,” he said.

Goose Creek Mayor Greg Habib reflected on Kirk’s approach to political dialogue. “Whether you agreed or disagreed with Charlie Kirk, he knew that speaking with and debating those with whom you disagree was and is the only way we find the truth,” Habib said. “Charlie’s civility to those with whom he disagreed will be greatly missed.”
Amy Stern, who represents District 5 on Berkeley County Council, said Kirk’s death underscores the need for national reflection. “So much for tolerance and acceptance,” she said. “This country needs a change of heart and morals.”

John McGrath, chairman of the Berkeley County Republican Party, said Kirk inspired his own involvement in politics. “Charlie was more than a conservative leader — he was a generational voice who inspired millions,” McGrath said. “His positive, infectious optimism created a movement that will live on for years to come.”
Turning Point USA, the organization Kirk founded in 2012, issued its own statement on social media, asking for privacy during this time of mourning. The post reads: “May he be received into the merciful arms of our loving Savior, who suffered and died for Charlie. We ask that everyone keep his family and loved ones in your prayers. We ask that you please respect their privacy and dignity at this time.”
Meanwhile, the FBI’s Salt Lake City field office issued a post urging the public to report information via their online tip form, seeking details regarding the Sept. 10 shooting at Utah Valley University.
