North Charleston Woman Killed on Calestown Rd. Crash Near Jamestown

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – A North Charleston woman died Thursday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash on Calestown Road, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office.

The wreck happened around 2:55 p.m. Sept. 11, when a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee traveling south on Calestown Road near Gumville Road ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree, said Master Trooper Frank Virzi.

The driver was taken to a nearby hospital. A backseat passenger, identified as 37-year-old Maria E. Aguilar Velasquez of North Charleston, sustained fatal injuries. The coroner’s office said Velasquez, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office was notified of the crash at approximately 3:09 p.m. Responding agencies included the coroner’s office, Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, Berkeley County EMS, North Berkeley Fire & Rescue, and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The crash remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office.
