BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. — Berkeley County School District officials said Friday they are monitoring the tropics but have not made any changes to school operations as a developing system—currently tagged 94L and expected to be named Imelda—gathers near the Bahamas.

District officials said students have been sent home with Chromebooks and teachers have eLearning plans ready in case conditions deteriorate.

Forecasters on Friday classified the disturbance as Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine, a designation used when a system isn’t yet a tropical storm but could bring tropical-storm conditions to land within 48 hours. If it strengthens, the next Atlantic name on the 2025 list is Imelda.

Forecasts still carry uncertainty, but meteorologists say parts of the Southeast, including coastal South Carolina, could experience heavy rain, gusty winds, and coastal flooding early next week, depending on the track and timing.

Another system, Hurricane Humberto, is strengthening over the open Atlantic and poses no immediate threat to the Lowcountry.
