BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. — Berkeley County deputies arrested an 18‑year‑old North Charleston man after a high‑speed pursuit that stretched across multiple counties and began during a proactive patrol targeting street racing activity, according to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Duane Lewis announced the arrest of Jesus Gregorio Solis Olquin, who faces charges including Reckless Driving, Failure to Stop for Blue Lights and Sirens, Driving Under Suspension, and Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer while Resisting Arrest.

Deputies were patrolling the area of Nexton Parkway and Interstate 26 on December 28 when they attempted to stop a black Ford Mustang that was speeding with its lights off on Volvo Car Drive. While a deputy was speaking with the driver outside the vehicle, investigators say Solis Olquin, who had been the passenger, slid into the driver’s seat and fled the traffic stop.

A short time later, deputies spotted the Mustang traveling eastbound on Interstate 26 near the Nexton Parkway on‑ramp. The vehicle was reportedly moving at more than 100 miles per hour and weaving through traffic. Deputies attempted another stop, but Solis Olquin continued to flee, leading them through Summerville and into Dorchester and Charleston counties.

Neighboring agencies assisted with traffic control and deployed stop sticks as the pursuit continued. The North Charleston Police Department successfully disabled the vehicle on Highway 78 near the Interstate 26 overpass, allowing deputies to take Solis Olquin into custody.

During a post‑arrest search, deputies say Solis Olquin became irate and head‑butted a deputy.

The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office said the incident underscores the dangers of street racing and reckless driving, noting that such behavior puts the public, motorists, and first responders at significant risk. Deputies plan to continue proactive enforcement efforts to improve roadway safety.
