SUMMERVILLE, S.C. – Police officers responding to a routine call in Summerville got a dose of the unexpected Wednesday afternoon when a baby kangaroo was spotted hopping through a residential backyard.
The Summerville Police Department said the animal was reported by a neighbor who noticed the marsupial bouncing around their property. Officers arrived on scene and engaged in a brief pursuit, which ended with the young kangaroo leaping into a backyard pool.

The animal was safely rescued and, with help from Dorchester County Animal Control, transported back to its home โ a nearby property that houses not only the adventurous young kangaroo, but another kangaroo and a wallaby as well.

According to SPD, the animals are under the care of a local veterinarian and enjoy spacious accommodations that reportedly rival the kangaroo enclosure at the Columbia Zoo.
The department shared the story on social media with a reminder to โalways expect the unexpected,โ and residents couldnโt agree more.
In South Carolina, owning animals like kangaroos is legalโunless your local municipality has restrictions in place.
