CHARLESTON, S.C. โ A Goose Creek woman has been sentenced to nearly three years in federal prison for stealing more than $146,000 from residents of a North Charleston nursing home, many of whom were physically or mentally incapacitated.
Courtney Jeanine Brown, 49, served as the business office manager at Riverside Health and Rehabilitation, where she used her position of trust to exploit 132 residents over a period of more than three years. According to federal prosecutors, Brown wrote checks to cash from residentsโ personal funds, deposited the money into her own account, and used it for personal expenses.
United States District Judge Bruce Howe Hendricks sentenced Brown to 33 months in prison, followed by three years of court-ordered supervision. Brown was also ordered to pay $160,300.69 in restitution. There is no parole in the federal system.
“This was a calculated betrayal of some of our communityโs most vulnerable individuals,โ said investigators, who described Brownโs actions as a serious breach of trust.
The case was investigated by the FBI Columbia Field Office, the South Carolina Attorney Generalโs Office, and the North Charleston Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Emily Limehouse led the prosecution.
