HANAHAN, S.C. — What began as a routine patrol for PFC Daniel quickly escalated into what may be one of the most adorable foot pursuits in department history.
According to the Hanahan Police Department, Daniel was cruising through Smithfield Place on Friday when he encountered what he initially believed to be a minor traffic obstruction. Instead, he found himself face‑to‑face with a compact, fast‑moving puffball later identified as Walter the Rabbit.

Authorities say the suspect immediately engaged in “advanced counter‑surveillance maneuvers,” which included sprinting in tight circles around the officer at speeds typically reserved for Olympic figure skaters and toddlers on a sugar high. Daniel attempted to initiate a standard roadside interview, but the suspect reportedly refused to answer questions, produce identification, or stop being extremely cute.

After a brief but spirited pursuit, the officer successfully detained Walter without incident. No injuries were reported.

A short time later, the department received confirmation of the suspect’s identity. “Thank you so much for detaining our escaped rabbit Walter!!!! I’m so glad everything went well and our little guy is safe now, thanks to you!” wrote owner Brandi Baker on Facebook.
Walter was safely returned home, where he is expected to face no charges but may receive a stern lecture about unauthorized neighborhood tours.
