BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – Charleston police have arrested a 35-year-old woman in connection with a deadly shooting on Clements Ferry Road in Berkeley County that investigators initially believed was a traffic crash, authorities announced Wednesday.

Police say Wonique Broughton of Charleston was taken into custody on January 28 and charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime following an extensive investigation into the January 14 incident.

Officers and emergency crews were dispatched to Clements Ferry Road around 7:30 a.m. after receiving reports of a vehicle that had crashed into a power pole about a half-mile from Cainhoy Road. When first responders arrived, they found a vehicle off the roadway with an adult man dead inside.

Investigators later determined the crash was not accidental. According to police, detectives learned the victim was driving when Broughton allegedly removed a firearm from her bag and shot him inside the vehicle. After the shooting, the car left the roadway and struck a power pole.

Broughton was transported to a local hospital following the incident, police said.
