ST. STEPHEN, S.C. โ Families across Berkeley County are being invited to grab their fishing gear and head to the water for a morning of fun, learning and friendly competition.
The South Carolina Department of Natural Resourcesโ aquatic education program will host a youth fishing rodeo on March 14 from 9 a.m. to noon at Elysian Fields Park in St. Stephen. The free event is designed to give young anglers a chance to fish, spend time outdoors and connect with others in the community.

Organizers encourage families to arrive 15 to 30 minutes early to allow time for parking and check-in. While advance registration is encouraged, additional sign-ups will be available at the event until capacity is reached.
The rodeo is open to children ages 6 to 15, with adults allowed to assist but not fish. Each child may keep up to five fish, though all bass must be released. Event organizers say the three largest catfish caught during the rodeo will earn trophy and award packages, which will be presented at the St. Stephen Catfish Festival on March 28.

Water, hot dogs and chips will be provided for participants, and a limited number of fishing rods and bait will be available. Families are encouraged to bring their own gear, along with items such as chairs, sunscreen, bug spray and coolers or buckets to transport any fish they catch.
Organizers note that no pets are allowed, with the exception of service animals, and alcoholic beverages and treble hooks are prohibited.
The event will take place at Elysian Fields Park, located at 957 Bogey Lane in St. Stephen, and is part of an ongoing effort by state wildlife officials to introduce young people to fishing and outdoor recreation in a safe, family-friendly setting.
