BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. — A routine traffic stop in Bonneau led to the arrest of a 62-year-old man on meth trafficking and weapons charges after deputies discovered more than 26 grams of methamphetamine in his vehicle, according to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Duane Lewis announced Tuesday that Gregory Bush, 62, of Canal Street in Bonneau, was taken into custody following the Feb. 7 stop. Bush is charged with trafficking methamphetamine — greater than 10 grams but less than 28 grams — and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

Deputies say the incident began when a Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office deputy was patrolling near Mendel Rivers Road and Magnolia Street and spotted a black Ford Raptor pickup truck with inoperable tag lights. The deputy initiated a traffic stop, and the vehicle pulled into a residence on Black Oak Road.

Authorities said the driver, later identified as Bush, appeared visibly nervous and told deputies he had a firearm inside the truck.

As part of the preliminary investigation, deputies called for a K9 unit to assist at the scene. The police dog conducted a free-air sniff around the vehicle and alerted to the presence of narcotics, deputies said.

During a subsequent probable cause search, investigators found a black cloth bag in the bed of the truck containing approximately 26.30 grams of methamphetamine.

“This arrest highlights the importance of proactive patrol and thorough investigations,” Lewis said in a statement. “Our deputies continue to work diligently to remove dangerous drugs from our communities and keep Berkeley County safe.”

The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office said it remains committed to targeting illegal drug activity and strengthening public safety across the county.
