GOOSE CREEK, S.C. – Goose Creek Police Chief LJ Roscoe has stepped down from her role, city officials announced Thursday, bringing an end to her seven-year tenure at the city’s police department. She was the city’s first female police chief.
City leaders confirmed they accepted Roscoe’s resignation earlier in the day and thanked her for her years of service leading the Goose Creek Police Department. During her time as chief, officials said Roscoe helped strengthen community outreach efforts while prioritizing public safety across the fast-growing city.

“For the past seven years, Chief Roscoe has led the City of Goose Creek Police Department with professionalism and enthusiasm,” the city said in a statement, adding that her leadership played a key role in advancing the department’s mission and building stronger connections with residents.
Roscoe reflected on her tenure in a farewell statement, calling her time leading the department “the honor of a lifetime.”
“Over the past seven years, we have built a stronger, more professional, and more community-focused department,” she said. “I am incredibly proud of what our team has accomplished together.”

The city has not yet announced the reason for her resignation.
Roscoe stepped into her role as Goose Creek’s police chief on Jan. 21, 2019. She replaced Chief Harvey Becker, who had led the police department since 1989.
Her hiring didn’t come without some controversy. Documents showed that Georgia’s Peace Officers Standards and Training Council recommended the revocation of Major LJ Roscoe’s certification in 2016. The recommendation was the result of the death of a jail recruit during a training exercise. DeKalb County Sheriff Jeffrey Mann, however, defended Roscoe’s hiring in Goose Creek in a statement to Live 5 News.
Less than a month ago, Roscoe along with Goose Creek Mayor Greg Habib announced a defamation lawsuit against Jessica Crimi as well as James Bessenger of The Carolina Courier for falsehoods relating to “crimes, misconduct and personal immorality.”
A search for Roscoe’s replacement is expected to begin soon. In the meantime, Goose Creek Police Captain Tom Hill will serve as interim chief, taking over day-to-day leadership of the department while the city works to identify a permanent successor.
