17-Year-Old Killed in Crash on Highway 402 in Berkeley County

A 17-year-old Summerville resident has died following a single-vehicle crash in Berkeley County, according to the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office.

HUGER, S.C. — A 17-year-old Summerville resident has died following a single-vehicle crash in Berkeley County, according to the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office.

The incident occurred on Wednesday on Highway 402 in the Huger area, where emergency crews responded to reports of a serious traffic accident.

Coroner officials identified the victim as Jayln Gilliard, 17, of Summerville. Authorities said Gilliard was the sole occupant and driver of a 2017 Hyundai sedan and was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The teen was pronounced dead at the scene.

Multiple agencies responded to the incident, including Berkeley County EMS, the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office, and Cainhoy-Huger Fire & Rescue.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol, along with the coroner’s office, is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
