MONCKS CORNER, S.C. — Construction upgrades at the Charleston Animal Society’s Berkeley Campus are expected to temporarily reduce space for adoptable animals, prompting shelter officials to ask the public for help through adoptions and fostering.
Improvements to the adoption floor are currently underway at the shelter’s Berkeley County location, part of a larger project aimed at enhancing the facility and improving conditions for animals. However, the work will temporarily cut the available adoption space in half.

“During the construction, we are going to lose half of our adoption floor, which is a huge challenge,” said Charleston Animal Society Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Aldwin Roman. “We are urging people to please come to the Berkeley Campus to adopt, so we can keep the limited space we have open for new stray animals coming in.”

The current adoption floor includes a 20-kennel area for dogs, but only one side of the kennels currently provides indoor-outdoor access. The construction project will add outdoor access for all kennels by removing part of a wall, installing fencing and pouring new concrete.
Shelter leaders say the upgrades are part of a larger $1.6 million adoption center project approved by Berkeley County government last year. The project will also include construction of a new adoption center building at the campus.
Berkeley County Supervisor Johnny Cribb said the improvements will help strengthen animal care services in the county.
“We are excited that this critical project is underway,” Cribb said. “We remain committed to providing quality animal care services and can’t thank Charleston Animal Society enough for bringing their expertise and passion to Berkeley County in advancing our mission.”

Officials say the upgrades will take place in phases over the next several months, with a grand opening of the new adoption center expected in late fall.
Adoption special announced
To help reduce overcrowding during construction, Charleston Animal Society is offering free adoptions for dogs and half-price adoptions for puppies at the Berkeley Campus.
How the public can help
Shelter officials say there are several ways the community can help during the construction period:
- Adopt a pet by visiting the Berkeley Campus at 131 Central Berkeley Drive in Moncks Corner.
- Foster an animal through the shelter’s foster program, which provides supplies and support for temporary caregivers.
- Spread the word by encouraging friends and family to visit the shelter and consider adopting.
Officials say community support during the construction phase will help ensure the shelter can continue accepting and caring for stray animals across Berkeley County.
