BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – A major water main break impacting thousands of residents was caused by a contractor accidentally puncturing a critical transmission line near Moncks Corner, according to an update from Santee Cooper.

The break occurred Monday evening when a contractor operating heavy equipment struck the main line connected to the Lake Moultrie Regional Water Plant. Officials said the contractor was not working on behalf of Santee Cooper.

The damaged line serves the water agencies operated by the City of Goose Creek, the City of Summerville Commissioners of Public Works, and portions of Berkeley Countyโ€”serving an estimated 200,000 residents.

Santee Cooper crews are currently on site assessing the damage and determining the scope of repairs. While water remains safe to use at this time, officials warn that some customers may begin to notice a drop in water pressure as the situation develops.

Residents across the affected areas are being urged to conserve water as much as possible until repairs are underway and the system stabilizes. Officials also cautioned that a boil water advisory could be issued later Monday night by one or more of the impacted agencies, depending on how conditions evolve.

Local officials say they will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
