GOOSE CREEK, S.C. โ€” Goose Creek Elementary students now have a new place to play โ€” and for many, itโ€™s a space designed with them in mind like never before.

School leaders and district officials gathered Tuesday morning for a ribbon-cutting ceremony unveiling a brand-new inclusive playground, the first of its kind at this size in the Berkeley County School District.

Principal Dr. Kellie Gebhardt said the playground is an incredible addition for students.

โ€œThis was beyond anything that I could have ever imagined,โ€ she said.

The playground is built to allow children of all abilities to play together, featuring elements like sensory benches, a music corner, swings, slides and shaded areas. The design encourages not only physical activity, but also cognitive development and social interaction through inclusive, sensory-focused play.

District leaders say the project is part of a larger push to bring more inclusive playgrounds to schools across Berkeley County.

โ€œWe went out and checked every facility โ€” all 28 โ€” and we made a priority list,โ€ said Keith Enos, BCSDโ€™s Director of Facilities. โ€œWeโ€™re just trying to chip away at that priority list.โ€

The district plans to expand inclusive playground access over the next several years, with Sangaree Elementary already slated for a new playground this summer.

Officials credited Enos, grounds supervisor Thomas Browder and Barrs Recreation โ€” a company specializing in inclusive playground equipment โ€” for helping bring the project to life.

โ€œI think it came out great,โ€ Enos said. โ€œThis is the first install this company has done for us, and they knocked it out of the park.โ€

As part of Tuesdayโ€™s celebration, several students in grades two through five with perfect attendance were recognized and given the honor of holding the ribbon โ€” and being the first to try out the new playground.

For Goose Creek Elementary, the new space represents more than just a playground โ€” itโ€™s a step toward making sure every child has a place to belong.
