BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Over 80 people attended the Francis Marion Memorial Service on Friday Feb. 27, 2015. Four organizations presented wreaths. There were 3 DAR chapters: General Marion’s Brigade of Moncks Corner, Margaret Gregg Gordon of Kingstree and Rebecca Pickens of Dillon, SC. The Marion Marauders Society, SCARNG of Mt. Pleasant also presented a wreath. The Belle Isle Garden Club decorated the gates to the cemetery.
The Washington Light Infantry served as Color Guard. John Mark McQuown sang “My Country Tis of Thee” and “Proud to Be an American.”
Dr. Steve Smith of USC spoke to the crowd about how important Francis Marion was to the cause of Liberty. He was very happy to have 40 students from St. John’s Christian Academy in attendance. They answered all of his questions correctly about the Swamp Fox! He shared with us that even though Marion died 220 years ago in 1795, he is still a very popular man in history. There are still books being published about his life.
The day was very nice after all the rain we have had and many attendees posed for a group photo in front of Marion’s Tomb. Remember the Swamp Fox!
