“We have a very small group of people that work tirelessly behind the scenes to make this event happen each year and while we are a small group, we are making big things happen!” stated Theresa Faircloth, the race’s director.
The race originally began in 2008 in Doylestown, Pennsylvania but has since grown to more than 50 locations—including here in the lowcountry. The event honors the many lives lost on 9/11 as well as the ‘Charleston 9’ and all military and emergency responders.
“We have recently joined forces with the Daniel Island Exchange Club and with their help, we are hoping to see more than 1,000 participants this year,” Faircloth stated. “It is an indescribable feeling to know that our donation is having an impact on the community and our heroes on a daily basis.”
The event will also include a special Guest of Honor, Medal of Honor recipient Corporal Kyle Carpenter, USMC. Each year, proceeds from the ‘9/11 Heroes Run’ benefit the Travis Manion Foundation, as well as local military and first responder charities and organizations.
“With proceeds from our 9/11 Heroes Run in Charleston, we have been able to donate almost $25,000 to the Travis Manion Foundation which assists our military, veterans and families of the fallen on a national level,” Faircloth added.
Additionally, organizers have donated almost $25,000 to local heroes by supporting the Charleston Fire Department, the Charleston 9 Memorial Fund, Gifting Warriors, SCFOP Distressed Officer’s Fund, Lowcountry Firefighter Support Team and Summerville Fire Department.
Proceeds from the 2015 event will again benefit the Travis Manion Foundation and SCFOP Distressed Officer’s Fund as well as the City of Goose Creek Fire Department and C&B Volunteer Fire Department!
“There is no set amount of money we wish to raise…we can’t put a price on our heroes! Our goal is to raise as much funding as possible so we can make as big of an impact as possible,” stated Faircloth. ” “We have been fortunate enough to outfit both the City of Charleston and Summerville Fire Departments with Streamlight Survivor flashlights that help these men and women do their jobs more safely and efficiently!”
