Berkeley County Hunters Discover Human Remains In Woods

crime scene tapeBERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–On Friday, two Berkeley County men hunting for deer in the Francis Marion National Forest in Charleston County made a gruesome discovery around 11:30 a.m. in Awendaw.

“I was coming down Whilden Road, and I was only going to hunt half a day, so I cut through the woods to come home,” stated one of the hunters who wishes to remain anonymous. “I seen a bunch a buzzards fly up across the ditch, so I stopped and backed up. When I stepped across the ditch, I saw what looked liked one of those 80 gallon black, lawn garbage bags.”

According to the hunter, he thought the remains initially belonged to an animal.

“A lot of people are killing hogs and leaving them on the side of the road. We thought it might’ve been a big hog,” he said.

The hunter says as he got closer, he realized the remains were human and immediately dialed 9-1-1. The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office and coroner responded to the scene shortly after 12 p.m.

At this time, authorities are not releasing too many details about the incident other than to say it is an “active investigation.”

The hunter told The Berkeley Observer he and his friend gave multiple statements to investigators and remained on scene for about three hours before going home.

“It looked like the remains had only been there for about two to three days,” added the hunter. “There were a couple of other people out there hunting. People were out there riding by it all morning.”
