

GOOSE CREEK, S.C.–Goose Creek Mayor Michael Heitzler has proclaimed November as โSouth Carolina Native American Heritage Monthโ in the City.
Heitzler signed the proclamation in a ceremony at the Goose Creek Municipal Center on Monday, Nov. 9.
Native Americans โhave played a vital role in the life of our State, City and Country, and their many contributions have enhanced the freedom, prosperity and greatness of South Carolina,โ the proclamation reads. โFrom ancient times to present Native American Indians have called the Berkeley County, St. James Parish, Goose Creek their home from various Native American tribal cultures and bands throughout history
โMany of these Native Americanโs descendants still reside in South Carolina and in the Goose Creek area today.โ
The proclamation honors the Berkeley County tribal community, The Wassamasaw Tribe of Varnertown Indians, for maintaining โthe history, culture, lifestyles and unique heritage of South Carolina Native American people.โ
