SCHP: Passenger Killed in Crash on Highway 17A Near Mail Route Road

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly single-vehicle crash that happened on Highway 17A early Thursday morning.

According to SCHP officials, the accident happened near Mail Route Road around 2:20 a.m.

Authorities say the driver of a 2003 Ford Mustang was traveling north on Highway 17A near Mail Route Road when the car ran off the road and hit a tree.

The driver was taken to the hospital but the passenger was transported to Roper Berkeley ER in Moncks Corner and pronounced dead after her arrival, Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury stated.

Authorities say the passenger and the driver were not wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.

No charges have been filed.

The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office will release the name of the driver pending notification of the immediate family.

UPDATE FROM CORONER:

On February 18, 2016 at 2:20 a.m. 32 year old, Tonda Wingo, of Bonneau was a passenger in a vehicle when it ran off the road and struck a tree.  The vehicle was traveling north on highway 17-A in the Macedonia community.

She was transported to a local emergency room where she was pronounced dead.  The Berkeley County Coroner and the SC Highway Patrol are investigating the accident.
