4-H Youth Gardening Contest Accepting Applications

garden plotBERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–SC 4-H Youth Development Programs have a short term project for youth who are interested in gardening.

The Small Garden Project will allow youth ages 5 – 19 to learn how to prepare, plant, maintain and harvest a small garden.  A contest record book will also be submitted for judging.  Seeds will be provided for one vegetable.

Youth will choose at least 2 other vegetable crops to grow. An area of at least 100 square feet will be needed for the garden.  Raised beds or container gardens are allowable as long as the square foot requirements are met. Groups of 2 or more youth may also participate. A group garden must use an area of at least 200 square feet. Group gardens will be judged based on the age of the oldest youth participant.

A registration fee of $10 for current 4-H members and $20 for non-members covers the cost of a soil sample, record book, score criterion and seed packet.  Registrations will be accepted until April 1. Soil samples will need to be submitted to the local County Extension office by May 1 in order to meet the May 20 planting deadline. The contest record book will be due on July 29.  Project details can be found  at  http://www.clemson.edu/extension/4h/4h_naturalresources/small_garden/index.html.

Youth will be divided into three categories prior to judging: cloverbuds
(5-8 years of age ), juniors ( 9-13 years of age ), and seniors ( 14-19 years of age ). Participants will be judged and awarded according to guidelines at local, regional and state levels.  Contact Gayle Williford at 843-563-5773 or [email protected] for more information.
