BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Santee Cooper personnel say they are prepared for the anticipated effects that Hurricane Matthew may have on Santee Cooperโ€™s service territory.

Officials say approximately 2 million South Carolinians depend on the state-owned electric and water utility as their power source, either directly or through the stateโ€™s electric cooperatives.

As of noon today, Santee Cooper went to a Condition 2 alert status. This means potential disaster-causing conditions are approximately 24 hours away and adverse effects to Santee Cooperโ€™s service area appears likely.

โ€œSantee Cooper will make every effort to keep electricity flowing to our 175,000 customers in Berkeley, Georgetown and Horry counties, and to our wholesale and industrial customers across the state,โ€ said Mike Poston, vice president of retail operations. โ€œOur equipment is lined up, our vehicles are ready, and we are finalizing details to be sure we can respond to outages as soon as we safely can.โ€
