GOOSE CREEK, S.C.–A kitchen fire is to blame for badly damaging a unit at theย Pine Harbour Apartments in Goose Creek on Thursday, according to firefighters.

Fortunately, crews were able to put out the fire before it spread to other nearby units.

Firefightersย with the City of Goose Creek, Rural Goose Creek, Hanahan fire departments and the Naval Weapons Station arrived toย flames from theย second-storyย unit before quickly extinguishing them.

In 2012, the apartment complex was the site of a deadly fire and explosion that killed 69-year-old Joseph Raeth, 4-year-old Samuel Garbe and 19-year-old Morgan Abernathy. Dozens more were left homeless.

During theย investigation, authorities say they learned thatย Shonni Abernathy and ย Jerald McCabeย used a one-pot methamphetamine lab in the apartment as well as other chemicals and toolsย for the manufacture of methamphetamine.

In 2014, Abernathy was sentenced to 30 years behind barsย for one count of conspiring to manufacture methamphetamineย and two counts of manufacturing methamphetamine where children reside.
