SCDOT: Expect Delays as Emergency Repairs Continue on College Park Rd. Bridge

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–SCDOT forces from both Berkeley and Charleston counties continue to actively work on the College Park Road bridge following a crash involving a 2008 Volvo tractor-trailer Thursday.

According to SCDOT, new traffic patterns have been established in order to provide two lanes in each direction. One lane will be a through lane, the other will provide left turn access onto I-26.

Friday’s work included removing and installing pavement markings, relocating and re-timing traffic signals, and pre-positioning assets for the work zone. Over the weekend, additional site work will be preformed to prepare the work zone.

New steel beams are being expedited to replace the existing damaged beams. These beams will be transported to South Carolina where additional fabrication and assembly will begin.

All repair work is being expedited to re-open the bridge as soon as possible, according to SCDOT officials.

Motorists in the College Park area will encounter severe congestion, authorities say. As progress continues, motorists can expect new traffic patterns. Please use caution if you are traveling in this area.

Meanwhile, the driver of the semi has been fined. Jeffrey Stokes, 53, of Kings Mountain North Carolina was ticketed for having an overwidth load, and over height load and operating without an oversized/overweight truck without a permit.
