BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–The U.S. Forest Service has shut down Boggy Head Rifle Range until further notice due to excessive trash and vandalism, according to the agency.
The closing of the range went into effect officially on Saturday.
“When your national forest lands are abused, everyone loses!” the agency posted on its official Facebook page.
The trashed rifle range has generated a lot of strong reaction from individuals who use the range.
“I will never understand why people go to beautiful places or outside in general, implying they enjoy nature, and leave trash and litter at the place they supposedly enjoy for its beauty,” stated Mike Luck.
“People have no respect or appreciation for what is given to them,” stated Tommy Porter.
“Been going there since the 80s and it was never this bad. People need to get their act together. If you bring it in, take it out. Simple,” stated Jeff Knox.
Boggy Head Shooting Range is located in Berkeley County along the Francis Marion National Forest.
The range is owned and operated by the U.S. Forest Service and free to the public to use. It includes a 100-yard backstop and shooting tables, including one fully-accessible to disabled visitors.
The agency will hold a cleanup event on June 29th. If anyone would like to help the U.S. Forest Service pick up trash, volunteers are asked to call (843) 336-2200.
