BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. – Berkeley County deputies have arrested a substitute teacher and soccer teacher accused of unlawful sexual activity with a student.
Detectives have charged Evan Christopher Thornton, 23, of Mt. Pleasant with:
Sexual battery with a student 16 or 17 years of age, no aggravated force or coercion
- Disseminating harmful material to a person under age 18
- Criminal solicitation of a minor
- Criminal sexual conduct with minor, 3rd degree.
According to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, an investigation revealed that the sexual activity began in the Fall of 2020 and continued until Winter 2021, during which time Thornton was a long-term substitute teacher and soccer coach of the student.
Deputies said the activity occurred both on and off campus as well as at pre-season soccer practice. It was not immediately known where Thorton was employed as a coach and substitute teacher.
Thornton was arrested and booked into the Hill-Finklea Detention Center to await a bond hearing.
The Mount Pleasant Police Department assisted with the investigation and arrest of Thornton.
