BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–Target recently awarded Berkeley County First Steps with a $2,000 grant to help fund Berkeley County Early Readers Fund.

โ€œWe are grateful to Target for their investment in Berkeley County children and families and look forward to sharing outcomes as we progress,โ€ organizers stated on their website.

The goal of the Berkeley County Early Readers Fund is to:

โ€ข Provide opportunities for exposure to books and early reading for children before entering elementary school
โ€ข Provide parents with family literacy strategies and materials to use at home
โ€ข Serve as community resource for early literacy and support child care providers in implementing developmentally appropriate early literacy and language development activities in their programs
โ€ข Disseminate a โ€œLiteracy Benchmarksโ€ document to track each childโ€™s progress and help parents identify interventions to support each childโ€™s reading development
โ€ข Outreach to special populations including rural, at-risk, and those for whom English is a second language
