BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. — Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office deputies swapped sirens for spokes Wednesday morning as they joined students for National Bike & Roll to School Day at Cane Bay Elementary, Cane Bay Middle, and Hanahan Elementary Schools.
The annual event, held nationwide, encourages students and families to opt for active transportation—like biking, walking, or rolling on scooters—as a safe, healthy, and community-focused way to get to school. It’s all about promoting physical activity, supporting safer routes for kids, and showing the value of walkable neighborhoods.
“Our deputies had a great time riding alongside students and supporting safe routes to school,” said Sheriff Duane Lewis. “It’s not every day you get to trade a patrol car for a bike and start your shift with a few high-fives and smiles. We’re proud to be part of a community that puts safety and fun first.”
Led by the National Center for Safe Routes to School, the event brings together law enforcement, schools, and families to raise awareness about infrastructure improvements and child safety. The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office says it remains dedicated to strengthening those partnerships and promoting youth well-being across the county.
