HANAHAN, S.C. — The Hanahan Police Department is warning residents about a scam text message circulating in the area, falsely claiming to be from the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

The scam message, which mimics an official notice, claims the recipient has an unpaid traffic ticket and threatens penalties such as license suspension, vehicle registration cancellation, and even prosecution if payment isn’t made by June 4, 2025. It includes a suspicious link resembling a DMV web address and urges recipients to pay immediately.

According to a social media post from the Hanahan Police Department, several concerned residents have contacted the Hanahan Municipal Court after receiving the text. Police confirm the message is fraudulent and emphasize that the South Carolina DMV does not contact individuals via text message regarding violations or payments.
