17-Year-Old Killed in Crash on Highway 402 in Berkeley County

A 17-year-old Summerville resident has died following a single-vehicle crash in Berkeley County, according to the Berkeley County Coronerโ€™s Office.

HUGER, S.C. โ€” A 17-year-old Summerville resident has died following a single-vehicle crash in Berkeley County, according to the Berkeley County Coronerโ€™s Office.

The incident occurred on Wednesday on Highway 402 in the Huger area, where emergency crews responded to reports of a serious traffic accident.

Coroner officials identified the victim as Jayln Gilliard, 17, of Summerville. Authorities said Gilliard was the sole occupant and driver of a 2017 Hyundai sedan and was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The teen was pronounced dead at the scene.

Multiple agencies responded to the incident, including Berkeley County EMS, the Berkeley County Sheriffโ€™s Office, the Berkeley County Coronerโ€™s Office, and Cainhoy-Huger Fire & Rescue.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol, along with the coronerโ€™s office, is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
