CAINHOY, S.C.–BP Chemical Company and the University of South Carolina teamed up Tuesday morning to surprise Cainhoy Elementary/Middle School students and promote reading among elementary schools students.
With the help of “Cocky’s Reading Express,” ten undergraduate students from USC came and read to the students of Cainhoy with a special guest, Cocky the Gamecock.
“Cocky’s Reading Express” is a collaboration between the University of South Carolina’s Student Government and the School of Library and Information Science Center for Children’s Books and Literacy.
This program strives to instill a love of reading in the hearts of elementary school students 
while showing students that acquiring strong reading skills is a large part of academic success.
Through this program each student is given a book to take home, not only as reminders of Cocky’s visit, but also as a reminder to continue reading. To date, “Cocky’s Reading Express” has distributed 76,660 books to children across South Carolina.
The event was all part of Trident United Way’s “Day of Caring.”
