BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.โ€”Approximately seven months after taking over the reigns as Berkeley Countyโ€™s newest GOP chairman, 31-year-old Josh Whitley has his eyes on another position. He has now announced plans to run for Berkeley County Council District 2.

โ€œI cannot express how excited I am to be running for County Council in the County I was born, raised, attended school, and where we returned in order raise our family,โ€ stated Whitley on Facebook. โ€œI am nearly speechless with the amount of support from our elected officials.โ€

Up until Tuesday, Tim Callanan of Daniel Island has represented District 2 for the last eight years. He resigned on January 6th in order to serve as the countyโ€™s new deputy supervisor of finance. Since vacating the seat, Callanan has publically endorsed Whitley for District 2.

โ€œAs one of my last actions as Councilman (and private citizen) I am happy to announce that I enthusiastically endorse and support Josh Whitley for Berkeley County Council District 2,โ€ stated Callanan on Facebook. โ€œHe has proven to be a leader of integrity, courage and conviction. He will make a great addition to County Council.โ€

In the short time since announcing his candidacy for the seat, Whitley has received additional political endorsements, including from: Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury, Hanahan Mayor Minnie Newman, Berkeley Co. Supervisor Bill Peagler, Senator Larry Grooms, Senator Paul Campbell, Clerk of Court Mary Brownโ€”and the list goes on.

District 2 currently consists of Daniel Island, the Clements Ferry corridor, along with areas of Hanahan and Goose Creek.

โ€œI think we can do great things for our districts,โ€ stated Whitely.

Whitley is a 2001 graduate of Berkeley High School, having grown up in the Pinopolis-Moncks Corner area. He now calls Daniel Island home with his wife and baby daughter.

In 2012, he was a major opponent of the Berkeley Co. School Districtsโ€™ โ€˜Yes 4 Schoolsโ€™ campaign.ย  Last year, he presented his concerns about the campaign to SC Attorney General Alan Wilsonโ€“which resulted in an ongoing SLED investigation and the indictment of Amy Kovach, the districtโ€™s communications director.
