Coroner: Man dies from carbon monoxide poisoning

An investigation revealed that a married couple used a charcoal grill to keep warm

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–According to Berkeley County Coroner, Bill Salisbury, approximately 2 a.m. on Thursday, EMS responded to a mobile home on College Park Road in reference to a sick person.

When crews arrived inside the home, the coroner says they found Audiel Lopez-Marroquin, 25, dead and his wife ill.  Salisbury says the woman was transported to a local hospital.

“During the investigation we found that a charcoal grill was in the enclosed bedroom and was used for heat,” stated Salisbury.

An autopsy was conducted and the results lead the coroner’s office to to believe that the young man died from carbon monoxide poisoning.

“We will wait until the final toxicology report is received before we make our finial ruling on the death,” said Salisbury.

The death was investigated by the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office and the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office.
