Coroner: Contractor killed by car while trying to avoid falling tree

According to the coroner, a crew reportedly cut a tree down and as Sutherland ran from from the falling tree, he ran into the roadway and was struck by a car.

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–According to Berkeley County Coroner, Bill Salisbury,  on April 6, 2014, at 11:45 a.m., 34-year-old Heath Sutherland from Philcampbell, Alabama was working on I-26 near mile marker 187.

Salisbury says Sutherland was working with a contractor doing debris removal from the recent ice storm.

The crew reportedly cut a tree down and as Sutherland ran from from the falling tree,  he ran into the roadway and was struck by a car.

The coroner says Sutherland was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead.

The death was ruled accidental and was investigated by the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
