Man dies from complications of 2005 shooting

crime scene 4BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–On October 22, 2005, David McCray of Wando was shot on Clements Ferry Road in Berkeley County.

Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury says he became a paraplegic as a result of his injuries.

The coroner says that on September 14, 2014 (9 years later) he was admitted to a local hospital due to problems from his injury.

Salisbury says that the 33-year-old died on September 22, 2014.

An autopsy was conducted and the coroner says that the results showed McCray died from complications from his gunshot wound.

His death has been ruled a homicide.

Police say McCray was shot in the ribs by an acquaintance at a Clements Ferry Road gas station called Rew’s Run-In.

According to court documents, the shooter, then 21-year-old Tanis Grant, turned himself in on October 24, 2005 and was charged with assault and battery with intent to kill and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.

The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office and the City of Charleston Police are conducting an investigation.
