BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C.–It’s a topic many people feel uncomfortable talking about: mental illness.

In South Carolina, about 170,000 adults battle mental illness while about 48,000 children live with serious mental health conditions.

To help those in need, the National Alliance on Mental Illness is offering brand new, free support groups in Moncks Corner. There are also groups in Summerville.

At both locations, there is a support group for people recovering from mental illness and there is another group for family members of people recovering from mental illness.

When left untreated, mental illness can have deadly and costly consequences. Nationwide, one life is lost to suicide approximately every 16 minutes.
